The doubles final in Umag was played by Mexican/Argentine duo Miquel Reyes Varela and Guido Andreozzi against the French duo Manuel Guinard and Gregoire Jacq. Andreozzi and Reyes Varela previously eliminated the Dutchman Sander Arends and his Ukrainian companion Denys Molchanov in the semi-finals and they also emerged as winners in the final.
What is striking about this winning duo is the positivity they radiate towards each other. A few years ago (2019) I had already discussed the do’s and don’ts of doubles with Robin Haase. Haase then also played in Umag and won the doubles title with his partner Philipp Oswald. He emphasized the importance of positivity towards each other. Encourage when something goes wrong and point out what is going well. Above all, don’t start whining and certainly not against each other.
It is nice to see how the Argentinian and Mexican put that into practice in the final. But this was also noticeable in the semi-finals. They started the match with a break behind Arends/Molchanov, but remained positive, came alongside and then took a break themselves. They won that match 6-4, 6-3. In the final they also won the first set 6-4 and in the second they only lost two games. The joy for the pair was enormous and for the ladies who traveled with them it was even greater. Afterwards, this radiant foursome had their picture taken!
