The winner of the tournament in 2016, the flamboyant Fabio Fognini, had to recognize his superior in the first round in the Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan. For a moment it seemed that the crowd favorite Pablo Fognini had only a rocky start. After losing in the first set (3-6), he made fewer unnecessary mistakes in the second and managed to elevates his level. It resulted in a 7-5 victory, but things went wrong for the Italian in the last set. The Colombian won the third set just like the first with 6-3 and so Fognini is already out in the singles. He still plays the doubles tournament together with his compatriot Bolelli. In that tournament he did won the first match together with Bolelli against Roberto Carballes Baena dan Martin Etcheverry (6-2; 6-2).
The tournament is also over for the Swede Mikael Ymer. After winning the first set, he lost the next two sets to Spaniard Jaume Minar (4-6; 6-1; 6-4). This also applies to the Swiss Henri Laaksonen who was defeated by the Spaniard Roberto Carballés Baena (6-4; 7-5).
