Despite the absence of Garbine Muguruza and Paula Badosa, the Netherlands failed to win a match against Spain. Arantxa Rus lost in her match against Sara Sorribes Tormo. The first set went quickly to Spain, just like yesterday against Nuria Parrizas Diaz, but Arantxa came back strongly in the second set. Where she persisted against Nuria with corss balls on her opponent’s backhand, her game now showed a bit more variation. She played with more conviction and managed to keep up well until 4-4. She even got a 30-15 lead in the next service game of Sara, but the versatile and handy Spanish lady managed to keep her serve. In the next game, she broke through Arantxa’s serve and that immediately marked the end of the game (0-6; 4-6).
As a result, the Netherlands fell behind a 3-0 deficit and so Spain has qualified for the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup. The Netherlands has one last chance in the play-offs in November. The last single match was no longer played, but the public could still enjoy the double match of Demi Schuurs together with the debuting Arianne Hartono against the Spanish duo Aliona Bolsova and Rebeka Masarova. For a long time it looked as if the Netherlands would win this match, although that would of course not affect Spain’s overall win, but in the end the Spaniards also won the last match. You will read more about this in the next item to be published soon.
