With Joao Sousa playing in the lower part of the schedule and Gastao Elias in the upper, and both Portuguese playing the quarter finals, it was a possibility: a Portuguese final. Unfortunately for the Portugese fans this dream will not come true. Elias did win his match against Pablo Carreno Busta (6-4, 6-4), but Joao went down against Andrej Martin. Playing at the Grand Stand it’s very hot on the court. Not only by the sunshine, but also because emotions were running high at the court. The referee made a decision that made Joao furious. A particular action of the umpire set Sousa on fire. For points he was very upset ‘In my entire life I have never seen a thing like this.’ Of course it had something to do with a ball being in or out, but there was more. What I couldn’t figure out. Being angry at the referee the audience turned against Joao. All these emotions didn’t improve his game and he went down against the Slovak Martin. Martin now faces Carlos Berlocq in the semi finals.
Fabio Fognini had a difficult start against the Bosnian Damir Dzumhur and lost the first set (4-6). He improved his game to a higherlevel and the brave fighting Dzumhur couldn’t keep pace: 6-1 and 6-1 for the Italian favorite. Fognini will play Gastao Elias in the semi final.
