Hope for Pecotic

Matija Pecotic ensures the first Croatian success in Umag. As the current number 343 on the ATP ranking, who never rose above position 206 (in 2015), his presence in Umag is not a given thing. He made good use of the wildcard he received to play the qualifying tournament by beating the former number 70 in the world ranking, the Italian Thomas Fabbiano in two sets (7-5, 6-2). Fabbiano got off to a good start and soon broke the Croat in the first set, but the left-handed Pecotic fought back on the gravel of Umag with powerful groundstrokes and sometimes a handy drop shot. With his win, he can continue to hope for access to the main tournament. To do that, he will have to beat Daniel Altmaier from Germany. Altmaier also defeated an Italian, namely Flavio Copelli (2-6, 6-3, 6-1).
In the other qualifying matches, the Czech Lukas Rosol, who is more often present in Umag and who in 2014 still won the doubles, was eliminated by the Serbian Nikola Milojevic (6-4, 7-5). Blaz Rola from Slovenia also lost his match against the Ukrainian (6-2, 6-4). The only success in the qualies for Italy comes from Alessandro Giannessi, who beat German Rudolf Molleker with 6-3 and 7-5. Serb Hamad Medjedovic was beaten by Filip Horansky 6-4, 6-7(2) and 6-1. Argentinians Renzo Olivo and Andrea Collarini did excellent business by both winning their matches. Nerman Fatic from Bosnia and Herzegovina lost 3-6 and 1-6 to Olivio and Collarini lost out to Daniel Masur from Germany with the clear figures of twice 6-1.
