A happy season’s ending
Without losing a single set during the entire tournament the Dutchman and the Romanian reached their final goal: winning the finals of the Barclays ATP world tour finals in London. On Saturday Rojer and Tecău were already honoured as the new world number one in the doubles after they had defeated the Bryan brothers. They have confirmed their ranking by defeating the compatriot of Tecău, Florin Mergea and his teammate Rohan Bopanna from India. Rojer and Tecău held on to an early break in the first set (6-4). Their aggressive way of playing put a lot of pressure on their opponents. A pressure Mergea and Bopanna couldn’t stand. Also in the second set they were broken by the Dutch-Romanian team. A lead they were not going to give away by staying focussed and playing well. This victory means an end of the season in style for the Wimbledon winners (6-4, 6-3).
“But because of the tension I had enough energy to play the match,
afterwards I can be tired.” – Tecău
Simply the best
Jean-Julien Rojer was full of confidence. Focused but not very nervous. “Yes, I slept well last night. Although we had to play yesterday evening and after the ceremony of becoming the world number one in doubles, its was not a long night, but I felt good,” Rojer says. “Well I have to admit that I didn’t slept so well”, his companion confesses to the media. “But because of the tension I had enough energy to play the match, afterwards I can be tired.” During this week on a decisive point we saw Tecău as the player who received. Now in the beginning of the match it was Rojer who received the service on the decisive deuce-point. We asked him after the match why he did that. “Well in the beginning Horia seemed to be a little nervous. I don’t know if he really was, you should ask him. But I had the impression that by receiving myself I could make him a little bit more comfortable on court. That’s why I did it. This is a nice example of an adjustment we make during the match, just like we discussed yesterday.” (see the post of November 21). The break early in the match was important. Both players played with confidence and a well-deserved victory was the result: they were simply the best!
