In straight sets into the finals
Even against the Bryan brothers Tecău and Rojer did not lose a single set. With this remarkable victory the Dutch-Romanian team did not only earn a place in the World Tour Finals, they even became the best doubles team of the world. At the beginning of the first set Rojer and Tecău took an early lead by breaking the Americans. They held on to their head start and won the first set with 6-4. For a while this scenario seemed to repeat itself in the second set. However, after being 3-1 behind, the Bryan Brothers came back to 3-3 again. How did Tecău and Rojer dealt with this come-back? By breaking a third time and therefore winning the match in straight sets. After their victory we spoke with Julian Rojer about their mental resistance. Every tennis player knows that it is best not to think about winning or losing on court, but instead to focus on the next point. Still, we see tennis players at all levels lose themselves emotionally on court. For example when they give away their lead. What is the secret of Rojer and Tecău to prevent this from happening? Do they have certain tricks for this? “No, we can’t use tricks for this. However, we have worked intensively on this lately. You can train your mental toughness. Getting angry and yelling on court often creates negativity that will ultimately cause you to lose grip on the match. You have to stay positive, work hard and hold on to what you have to do. This stability on court is one of the biggest straights of Mike and Bob Bryan. We have watched the way they play closely and learned a lot from them.”

Honoured for being the world’s best
Rojer and Tecău will now face Tecău’s compatriot Florin Mergea and Rohan Bopanna from India. However, the successful team already had the honour to raise a giant cup for becoming the new world’s number one. As you can see on the pictures they enjoyed their beautiful moment in the spotlight in the impressive O2 Arena in Londen, where also David Backham was present. If this celebration might decrease the players’ focus? No way! Julian and Tecău take their job very seriously. Still, there is time for jokes during the press conference.
